Today, August 19, a final lecture within the scientific and pedagogical advanced training in the field of agricultural sciences and food, organized by the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, Cuiavian University in Włocławek and the Center for Ukrainian and European Scientific Cooperation has been held.

The online lecture was devoted to the topic “Selection developments in resolving a production problem.” The speaker at this event was Lavrynenko Yurii Oleksandrovych, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, Academician of NAAS of Ukraine, Lead Research Fellow at the Department of Selection of the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of NAAS of Ukraine. Yurii Oleksandrovych is a real expert in his field: he has been working at the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of NAAS of Ukraine for 46 years! His areas of research include adaptive eco-friendly crop production, genetic bases of selection and creation of varieties with high specific adaptability to irrigation conditions, diversity of grain gene pool in primary and secondary genetic centers, etc. Yuriy Oleksandrovych is known to everyone as a co-compiler of the “English-Russian-Ukrainian Biological Dictionary (Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Medicine).”
This lecture was very interesting and informative. Yurii Oleksandrovych spoke about the dynamics of the world’s population and the area of arable and agricultural land per capita. Now there is a decrease in arable land with an increase in population. There is an urgent need for humanity to increase food resources. However, in Ukraine today we see an increase in yield, which is provided by selection developments. Ukraine ranks 3rd in the world in terms of yield (higher yields are only in the United States and Argentina), and this is also due to selection developments.
Yurii Oleksandrovych stressed that the attention of breeders of the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of NAAS of Ukraine is now focused on soybeans, alfalfa, corn and many other crops.
We truly thank all the participants for their active participation! We are waiting for you at our new events!
