Today, on April 16, the fourth online lecture has taken place within the course for advanced training of musicologists “Music in the system of art education: relations and counteractions”. The topic of today’s lecture is “Timbre type as a basis of a musical image in the art of singing”. The speaker is Ohanezova-Hryhorenko Olha Vadymivna, Doctor of Arts, Professor at the Department of Solo Singing of Odessa National A. V. Nezhdanova Academy of Music, Honored Artist of Ukraine, laureate of the competition operetta artists (1996) and vocal competition “Art of the XXIst century” (2003).

The speaker has been teaching vocal since 2006, and thus, can bring up to speed on how signing influences an image in musical activity. Olha Vadymivna’s area of expertise is predominantly features and a structure of musicals and the development of qualities and abilities of musical actors. The speaker is well-known and respected in her home city: she recorded an anthem of Odesa and, last year, was awarded a badge of honor of Odesa Mayor named in honor of G.G. Maraslis of the third degree.
To dig into the topic of the lecture under consideration, it is necessary to understand what the term “timbre type, or “voice pattern”, means. The person, who has once watched an opera or a musical, should realize that the choice of an actor also depends on his vocal, since not only his acting talent matters; it is about how an actor’s voice, timbre and tone fit a role. There are several ranges of voice in the art of singing: soprano is the voice of the main female characters in the performances, mostly of naive and kind girls; mezzo-soprano is an image opposite to soprano, e.g. peculiar for girls having a strong character; contralto is used for middle-aged or elderly women (they have a low voice); tenor is specific to the main character; baritone is the opposite of tenors: according to the plot, they help the main characters or are their antagonists; bass is peculiar to the oldest characters in the opera: kings, emperors and philosophers (i.e, those who should teach wisdom).
In the context of today’s lecture, Olha Vadymivna has characterized the features of the mentioned voice ranges in details and a manner understood by the audience; she has also provided cases of all the stage images.
