Today, on July 30, the workshop “The basic development trends of the European higher education and prospects for the strategic planning in Ukrainian high school” has been held in Zaporizhzhia National University with the participation of honoured guests: Taras Finikov, Professor of the University of Warsaw, and Artem Bardas, Professor of National Technical University Dnipro Polytechnic, which Viktoriia Yankovets and Anastasiia Borodai, representatives of Secretariat of the Center for Ukrainian and European Scientific Cooperation, have attended.
Mykola Frolov, Rector of Zaporizhzhia National University, Doctor of History, Professor, Honorary Figure of Education of Ukraine, Academician of the Academy of Science of Higher Education, has made an opening statement welcoming all colleagues and turned it over to Taras Finikov, PhD in History, Associate Professor, President of the International Foundation for Education Policy Research, Professor of the University of Warsaw.
The workshop’s preliminary matter has involved challenges, needs and development trends of the global education. Taras Volodymyrovych has proposed to consider the OECD project “The Future of Education and Skills 2030” for understanding the growth prospects of higher education.

How can we train students for uncreated workplaces, tackle social challenges, which we can’t imagine yet, and use non-invented technologies? How can we guarantee their prosperity in the interdependent world where they should understand and assess different standpoints and views of life, closely cooperate with others and take responsible actions towards sustainable development and collective well-being?
The project is to answer two questions:
- What knowledge and competences do modern students have to have, and what worldview and values do they have to possess to succeed and form the world in 2030?
- How can the learning systems effectively contribute to acquiring such knowledge, skills, views and values?
Further, the speaker has examined the current situation in Europe as well as challenges which the education institution must face. Four key priorities of the European education policy are identified:
- overcoming of rising disparity in students’ skills and assistance in the development of their skills;
- formation of inclusive eco-systems of higher education;
- guarantee of HEI participation in the development of innovation;
- support of effective systems of higher education.
The action programme of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (June 2020) towards sound higher education and the advancement of adult education has also been discussed.
At the end of the workshop, Taras Volodymyrovych has covered the issues of features of the development strategies of Ukrainian universities and provided reasoned responses to questions of the academic staff of Zaporizhzhia National University.
After the workshop and Q&A session, Taras Volodymyrovych has solemnly awarded PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor, Honoree of Excellence in Education of Ukraine, Member of Ukrainian Educational Research Association, Doctoral Student of Zaporizhzhia National University Viktoriia Meniailo, who successfully implemented the micro-project “Forming European Project Culture in the Academic Community (Case Study of Zaporizhzhia National University)”, with the certificate of participation in the project “Innovative University and Leadership” (Phase V “Interdisciplinarity and Intersectorality and University Development Strategies”).
