At the World Conference on Science in Budapest, Hungary, in July 1999, the issue on the need to fix the date in the calendar was raised. Outstanding scientists, environment experts and politicians proposed to establish such a holiday, which would contribute to the dialogue between the public and science in solving the most burning problems of a planetary scale. Following the order of the conference (1999), UNESCO formally established the World Science Day proclaiming it at the General Conference in 2001. Globally, Science Day was first celebrated on November 10, 2002. Since then it has been widely celebrated around the world and accompanied by events promoting science. UNESCO annually carries out extensive work with governmental organizations, scientific and educational groups, and the public on the extension of knowledge about the significance of World Science Day.
